The Conference Room Conundrum

Ever felt overshadowed in a team meeting?

Imagine this: you're in a team meeting for a new project, and you’re excited to share your creative idea that could really boost the project’s innovative edge. As the meeting starts, you're already feeling inspired. However, almost immediately, 'that' colleague - well-known for their bold personalities - take center stage. Their voices are loud, animated, and overshadowing every opportunity to speak.
You sit quietly with your notebook, striving to articulate your ideas amidst the commotion. Each attempt to contribute is overshadowed by the vigorous exchanges dominating the room. The overlapping discussions make it nearly impossible to interject, causing your confidence to vanish. The issue extends beyond the excessive talking; their dominant presence implicitly suggests that quieter voices hold less importance.
This sense of being overshadowed, of knowing your input may be dismissed even before it is fully developed can lead to questioning your value within the group.
This scenario isn’t uncommon. Being part of the corporate world, I've witnessed countless moments where potential was stifled simply because someone didn't feel safe enough to share their unique perspective.
In a healthy work environment, every voice matters!
If you recognise yourself in this scenario, here are my top 3 strategies that might help when you feel overshadowed by loud voices:
Prepare the conversation: Write down your key points and practice them beforehand. Being prepared helps you confidently join fast-paced discussions. If you are not the host, seek support from the facilitator and propose a round-robin or set speaking slots so everyone's voice comes through.
Assertive signaling: Use body language like raising your hand. When you get the cue, start with a phrase like, "I have an idea that might contribute to this discussion," to carve out your turn to speak.
Follow-Up engagement: post the meeting, send an email or chat message to share your thoughts. This ensures your ideas are acknowledged and shows effective communication and dedication.
