Have you ever accomplished something so big after working incredibly hard, putting in all the time and effort into something you’re so passionate about and want to share without coming across boastful or arrogant?

Recently, I was asked to support a colleague (let’s call him Allan) to co-facilitate an information session. Given my capacity I hesitated at first but eventually agreed to assist because it’s a topic that I’m also passionate about. Little did I know, I ended up having to create majority of the presentation pack - Allan created ONE slide (which is the only one he spoke to), and when the invitation to the session went out and I notice that my name wasn’t on there as a facilitator – I felt a little uncomfortable, but continued smiling and went along with it thinking that my work will speak for itself.

On the day of the session, the host introduced Allan and totally forgot about me, I remained professional and played the presentation and facilitated my segments. We received loads of positive feedback during the session and the only name that was mentioned was Allans.

I was gutted! Mostly disappointed that Allan stayed quiet and just took the credit.

I’m sharing this story because whether we like it or not, the reality is - in the corporate world, self-promotion is not just a skill, it’s an art – The Art of Humblebragging

It’s the delicate balance of showcasing your achievements without overshadowing others.

It's a skill that, when done right, can open doors and create opportunities in your career.

Owning our success is crucial, and acknowledging our achievements is important. Whether it's leading a successful project, enhancing a process, or assisting a colleague with their work, these accomplishments (big or small) merit recognition and are certainly worth sharing.

The key is to share them in a way that also acknowledges the collaboration nature of your work environment. Here are some tips I found useful to help practice the art of humblebragging subtly and effectively:

Embrace Team Spirit

Self-promotion doesn't have to be a solo act. Compliment a colleague or peer while discussing your own achievements. This approach not only highlights your success but also demonstrates your appreciation for others which can reflect positively on you and help build a supportive work environment.

This is the technique I used to self-promote in my experience with Allan. As the host closed the session, I left the following message in the virtual chatroom; “Thankyou, I’m thrilled to see the positive energy and feedback during the session, it was an honor to co-design and co-facilitate with Allan, we couldn’t have done it without our creative minds combined” – and it worked! People that saw my message started to reach out requesting to connect and chat further about my segments.

Talk Impact, not just Success

Focus on the impact of your work, explain how your success supports a business strategy or goal. Tell a story that illustrates your skills and how they've contributed to your achievements. That way, you’re stating a fact without appearing boastful and shifting the conversation from self-centered to value oriented.

Be Genuine

Authenticity is key, it resonates with people and can prevent you from coming across as arrogant. When you share your accomplishments, do so because they are genuinely important to you, not just to impress others. People are more likely to respond positively and be genuinely interested in your achievements.

Timing, find the sweet spot

Select appropriate times to share your achievements, being mindful of social cues to avoid unwelcome self-promotion, which may be perceived negatively and be counterproductive. Show consideration for your audience by presenting your accomplishments in a manner that contributes positively to the dialogue.

Be Resourceful

Being recognised as a helpful and knowledgeable individual can serve as a subtle form of self-promotion. Whenever possible, provide guidance. Combining resourcefulness with effective self-promotion can be a potent strategy for advancing your career and establishing your personal brand.

Get on the radar - what is one thing you can do this week that would give you more visibility?

Keep in mind, the art of humblebragging doesn’t have to be a dreaded task, find that sweet spot where confidence meets humility and where your achievements can shine without dimming the light on those around you.

Happy Humblebragging and let your genuine enthusiasm shine through!
