The Ripple Effect

In our fast-paced work environment, it’s easy to get caught up in deadlines and tasks. But sometimes, a simple question can make all the difference.

It was an ordinary Tuesday morning in the office, the sun peaked through the blinds, casting a warm glow across my desk. 8am and the office is still empty, but there’s so much noise in my head – spinning in my to do list, thinking about the looming project that just got assigned to me on top of my existing workload, juggling the deadlines and preparing for meetings I have for the day when my phone buzzed - it was a message from an old colleague who I haven’t spoken to in a couple of months.

Her message read - “Hey Jenn, I know we’ve both been busy lately, but I wanted to check in. How are you really doing?”. I glanced at the message, took a deep breath and typed out my truth – “Thanks for checking in. Honestly, I’ve been overwhelmed. Work, family, everything." She responded immediately - “I get it, let’s grab coffee. No work talk, just a chat.”

Over coffee, we sat in a quiet corner in the café and this is where the ripple effect began. We both shared our struggles, we laughed, we teared up, and suddenly, the world felt less heavy.

This simple conversation not only strengthened our relationship but also created a ripple effect. We checked in on each other regularly. We shared articles on self-care and recommended books and podcasts on resilience and wellbeing. Our conversations weren’t just about venting; they were about growth. It didn’t stop there, my colleague and I started checking in on others, and soon, our teams became more connected and supportive.

This experience taught me the power of a simple question and its ripple effect.

In a world that's constantly moving at a fast-pace, it's easy to get caught up in our own lives. However, by cultivating a culture of storytelling, embracing vulnerability and genuine care, we can create a workplace where everyone feels valued and supported.

So here’s the ripple effect - checking in on someone is a small gesture with the potential to create a ripple effect of positivity and support in the workplace.

Here are some questions you can ask to genuinely connect with others:

  • Are you ok?

  • How are you really?

  • What’s been going on lately?

  • How can I support you right now?

  • Tell me about your day or How’s your day?

  • I’ve noticed you’ve seemed {emotion}, is everything ok?

  • Would you like to grab a coffee or go for a walk?

Remember, sometimes it’s not just about asking questions, it’s about listening and being present that can make all the difference. You never know whose world you might brighten, whose burden you might ease.

In saying that, as we navigate through the hustle and responsibilities, it’s also important to remember to pause – take a deep breath and check in on ourselves. When we own our wellbeing, we’re better equipped to be present, lift others and create ripples of positivity that enhance our workplace and build a more resilient world around us.

How are you treating yourself today?
